Going Clear – Scientology and the Prison of Belief

Going Clear movie film cover

Simply put, this documentary is an absolute must see for anyone remotely interested in the topics of religion, mind control, Hollywood conspiracies and of course – Scientology itself. But don’t go thinking this is some cheap shot one hour ‘special’ used to fill broadcast space in between advertising. It is evident quite quickly that a lot of time, effort and money went into this production.

To the average viewer, this film contains some pretty fantastical facts about Scientology. The type that had it not been proven to you, you might not believe. Thankfully though, to even the most knowledgeable about the cult itself, it is still very much worth a watch as it strings all these pieces together to form a rather strange looking tapestry of what exactly goes on behind the scenes of this organisation.

Tom Cruise

An organisation which has captured the minds (and pockets) of many people, but has become synonymous with having within its ranks, a number of high profile celebrities including Tom Cruise and John Travolta.

Helpfully, this documentary goes back to the earlier years of L. Ron Hubbard, examining not only the beginning of the church but also his professional and personal life before and during the formation of Scientology. Many of the talking heads in this film are actually key ‘witnesses’ to what has occurred, including former high ranking members Mark Rathbun and Mike Rinder, actor Jason Beghe, director Paul Haggis, and more.

While many articles and programmes on Scientology have been made, this has easily been the most comprehensive and thoroughly researched piece of film to date. Informative and enjoyable to watch, this documentary will walk you through the madness behind this organisation, the questionable transfer of power to the new leader David Miscaviage, leading to the crescendo - an examination of what is happening in this organisation today - and how far they are prepared to go.
